Pioneer DJM-909

This mixer is the evolution of what DJs have become. Pioneer took it a step further, understanding many notable DJs and turntablists' needs and demands. Crossfaders and volume faders just aren't the same anymore. They've become as important as a piano key or guitar strings. With the DJM-909, you can manipulate sound coming in, PLUS you can add to it. Performing "headtones" will not require an RCA to 1/4´´ cable with this mixer. You can actually change up notes from many frequencies with volume faders. Using the onboard "vocoder" your mixes can get a lot more creative. One of the most eye-catching features on this mixer is the TouchScreen effects module that extends Pioneer's legacy of effect processors. But even with this solid legacy, they've managed to add new and innovative components. The knobs and faders become an instrument and a complement to the effects. The revolutionary crossfader is my favorite part of the mixer. The magnetic, non-contact crossfader is equipped with a tension adjuster that can leave your fader as precise as a studio console or as light as a feather. This mixer has great sound, a clean layout, rugged componets and tons of ground-shaking innovations. There's simply nothing like it on the market today.

PIONEER DJM-909 DJ Mixer: The World’s First “Touch Screen” Effects Control

The Pioneer DJM-909 is a breakthrough DJ mixer offering innovative features unlike ANYTHING you’ve ever seen. Check out exciting “world’s firsts,” like precision crossfader and fader curve controls with user-customizable “feel.” And how about the most exiting thing to hit the DJ circuit yet: a touch screen that controls 50 killer effects and fader performance functions. This high-end battle/performance DJ mixer is ideal for use with the CDJ CD players in both form and function. The improved sound quality and unsurpassed reliability are bolstered by a host of new effects. The DJM-909 offers powerful club quality sound in a battle mixer. You’ll enjoy sensitive yet solid gripping EQ knobs, durable transform switches and precise/accurate crossfader curve control. And the proprietary "non-contact" crossfader technology ensures unprecedented durability and reliability.

The most important feature on any battle mixer is its crossfader and fader performance. The DJM-909 introduces the most precise and customizable crossfader in the industry. The crossfader is highly durable and has double-fade control allowing each half of the crossfader the ability to be adjusted independently! All fader curves can also be seen and adjusted with visual reference on the mixer’s fader curve adjust screen. If that isn't enough, the crossfader “feel” can also be adjusted to your preference (a breakthrough functionality). Each channel fader curve can be adjusted from a smooth volume change to a dynamic volume on/off at the tip of the channel faders (bottom or top). In turntablist slang, you will be able to crab-scratch the channel faders from either the top end or bottom end of the fader. You can also connect with Pioneer's CDJ series CD players to employ the fader start capability. This allows you to automatically start or stop playback by the sliding crossfader or channel fader.

The DJM-909 has an impressive collection of built-in effects and an innovative touch sensitive display. A total of 50 different effects can be independently assigned, utilized and tweaked through the mixer’s user friendly touch screen control. Additional knobs also exist for further parameter adjustments. Revolutionary effect presets range from fader synths to transform to touch phaser to vocoder. A send/return is also built-in to connect an external effector. The clean, open fader design affords easy scratching and beat juggling. Other features include a session line-in with volume control, cueable master output, mic input and selectable phono/line switches. There’s also a tempo tap button, cueable effects switch and an input for a foot switch to control effects.

The fader effect can be assigned to a channel fader or crossfader from the touch screen so that the faders are capable of controlling and varying the effect's parameter simply by moving the crossfader or channel fader. The beat effect is capable of synchronizing effects with the BPM for high accuracy effect timing. The mixer is equipped with an auto BPM counter so users can quickly view the song tempo. Designed with scratch DJs, studio/production DJs and turntablists in mind, this mixer is outstanding for any DJ who’s ready to take his skills to the next level wanting to improve their performance level.

Pioneer DJM-800

The DJM-800 mixer gives professional DJs the tool they need to expand their musical horizon, with capabilities for mixing records, remixing, producing and performing. Pioneer's DJ mixers have a reputation for providing high quality audio and reliability. The new DJM-800 incorporates features recommended by many professional DJs and club engineers, raising the bar on sound fidelity and ease of mixer operation.

Most important are its high quality 24bit/96kHz sampling and effect capabilities.

High Quality Audio
The analog signal from the player passes through the shortest signal route, first digitized at 24bit/96kHz through a pro A/D converter where it reaches the digital mixing stage with the best sound possible. The mixing is carried out by 32bit DSP with minimal deterioration of sound quality. A highly rigid chassis minimizes unnecessary vibration, which could adversely affect sound quality. The mixer also incorporates a dual-shield structure for eliminating entry of digital noise and a high performance power supply for noise-free power.

Sound Color Effects For A New Style of DJ Mixing
The world's first DJ mixer with Auto Harmonic Tuning detects the key of song and automatically corrects to the closest true key. In music theory terms, when a DJ raises the pitch of a song in the key of C by three percent, the song is no longer in the key of C, but somewhere between C and C sharp. This makes it impossible to perform a perfect harmonic mix.

Pioneer's new Harmonic Tuning feature takes the key of the source audio and adjusts the pitch until it is that of a standard note. Of course still has to know some basics about music, such as which keys match, in order to pull off an acoustically perfect harmonic mix.

World class DJs currently spend thousands of hours learning the keys of their music and re-mastering their library to be in in.perfect pitch in.. Now the DJM-800 makes it easier to perform a in.Harmonic Mix in..

Effects
The DJM-800 incorporates a highpass / lowpass filter, notch filter and bit crusher effect for all channels. In conjunction with the additional Beat Effects, 50 combinations of effects are possible.
Higher quality effects at 24bits make for a cleaner sounding remix. The effects automatically detect the BPM of the music and sync to the beats.

The DJM-800 includes some familiar effects, plus some new ones: Echo, Delay, Reverse Delay, Pan, Transform, Filter, Flanger, Phaser, Reverb, Robot, Chorus, Roll and Reverse Roll.

Digital Input/Output terminals
Digital inputs and outputs allow for connection with other digital-capable equipment for a fully digital chain, without degradation of sound quality.

The DJM-800 is not only ideal for the club professional but also great in a recording studio environment where high fidelity sound is required. Input frequencies of 44.1/48/96kHz are compatible; output frequency is selectable between 48/96kHz.

Fully Assignable MIDI function
There are a total of 61 assignable controls. The MIDI signal can be sent from almost all knobs and switches on the surface of the DJM-800 to external MIDI equipment. Since the mixer can send out many MIDI signals, it can be used as a flexible interface to music software or hardware such as Ableton Live or EDIROL V-4 Video Mixer.

Rotary Volume Knobs (optional)
The main volume fader knobs can be replaced with rotary volume knobs (DJC-800RV), which are especially valuable for extended mixing providing more subtlety and precision.

Numerous other features make the DJM-800 ideal for a sophisticated DJ:
-- Cross Fader Assign allows the DJ to assign each channel's input to the cross fader.

-- Fader Curve Adjust allows the user to change the cross fader/channel fader curve.

-- When connected to a Pioneer CDJ player, the Fader Start allows playback to be started by simply sliding the cross fader or channel fader.

-- A built-in three-band equalizer enables level control within a -26dB to +6dB range for high, mid, low bands, respectively.

-- The Talk Over feature automatically lowers track volume so an MC can talk over the track.

-- The Mic Signal Cut eliminates the microphone sound output to the booth monitor to prevent feedback.

-- The DJ can check the peak level of the input audio for each channel and the master.

Technics SLDZ 1200 CD Turntable

The Technics SL-DZ1200 is the first Technics DJ CD player, and it took them an extra long time to release it. However, it was definitely worth the wait! The SL-DZ1200 is a very pleasing digital Tabletop CD-DJ deck to look at: it's very individual, and provides one of the best vinyl turntable-simulation CD experience of all the leading single CD-DJ tabletop players. The main reason for this statement is that the motor and platter have been built around the original analog Technics SL-1200 motor.

This feature also gives the SL-DZ1200 an instant familiarity. It allows DJs that are still hesitant to picking up CDs over vinyl to surely change their mind (or at least give it a try). In addition to the original SL-1200 motor, the spinning platter is one of the largest available on a single tabletop CD-DJ player at 10 inches. The platter on this table is the second largest platter available and the biggest being on the Numark CDX and HDX. The Slip disc surface that is used for scratching is very similar to a vinyl record. You can also head over to ebay or another online retailer and get real 10" vinyl slip discs that won't void your warranty and gives it a true vinyl feel.

The look of the SL-DZ1200 is simply amazing! As everyone might have guessed, the player is very similar to that of the original silver SL-1200 turntable. It also has those classic start/stop buttons, power tower and strobe strip.

These players have many, many features crammed onto its top panel along with the display and slip disc surface. Despite being a relatively small machine (smaller than the Pioneer CDJ-1000Mk2, but bigger than the Denon DN-S5000), It still delivers all of the features DJ's want.

The display screen in the center of the Slip Disc surface is able to rotate 360 degrees, so you can have a variety of set-up positions to suit the DJ's individual preference. It's unlikely that anyone would actually use this feature, but if you were using these decks for scratching, you might want to rotate one of them so that both start/stop buttons are as close as possible to the mixer's crossfader.

There are two playback modes on the Technics SL-DZ1200: CD or turntable. A DJ might need to flip between the two settings in order to take full advantage of everything the SL-DZ1200 has to offer. You will use the unit's turntable-simulation feature when you want to scratch and DJ on the fly, but to operate the platter controlled effects you need to select 'CD' mode (possibly for mixing).

In turntable mode a DJ will have to adjust further settings like the brake speed (there is a back panel control knob). There is also a top panel control labelled 'instant change' near the reverse switch. The instant change button directly affects the reverse switch and start/stop functions. Meaning if the instant change button is pushed…as soon as you press the start button, the source will start instantly from its current location. If you hit the reverse switch with instant change on then you will instantly change the direction of the source sound. With the instant change button off, the SL-DZ1200 is just like a Technics SL-1200 analog deck, such that when you press the start button there is a very slight drag before the deck reaches the required speed.

The SL-DZ1200 also has seamless loop function positioned on the central panel near the display. In addition to the loop function; there is also a real-time record feature linked to the (4) cue pads and (4) sample pads. This is an excellent, easy-to-use tool, with the cue function allowing DJs to do extremely fast mixing and remixing, while the sampling function (four 10-second pads) allows the DJ to record and replay samples to create an original mix!

The Technics SL-DZ1200 also has 'vinyl simulation' and 'dynamic FX'. Vinyl Simulation simulates various analog systems, like the output of an SL1200 turntable, a range of different cartridge types as well as radio and telephone settings. DJ's will most likely set it on Analog SL-1200 and leave it there.

The Dynamic FX function provides nice selection of effects; some can be used in turntable mode, BUT some of them are platter-controlled which means you will need to switch the unit into CD mode to use them. It just so happens that these are the best effects, such as TT Pan, which pans the sound depending on the platter movements.

The pitch controls gives the DJ all the control they could ever need, with an adjustable range of +/-8, 16, 33 and 50%, plus there's a reset button (like the SL1200's quartz lock) and a pitch lock control.

Issues with the DZ1200:
The biggest issue on this player is the fact that you cannot scratch with the unit while in Pitch Lock mode. If you try to do so, you will hear some serious distortion and reverb.
Another issue with the machine is that on "some" of the original units actually have slip discs that don't exactly fit 100% on the surface. It will feel like a vinyl record that has a center hole that is slightly too big. In order to fix this issue; you can order a new slip disc from Technics or the vinyl slip disc online. Or you can just slip a piece of paper in there to accommodate for the big size.
The final issue comes from MP3 CD's that are less than 128 bit-rate. If the bit-rate of an MP3 CD is less than 128 then you may experience some slight digital distortion while scratching or during playback. This is more of a problem on DZ1200's with 2.1 firmware or lower. (The new firmware version of 2.3 clears up 90% of the digital distortion on these low bit-rate CD's).

Conclusion

The Technics SL-DZ1200 suites its name and reputation well, with rock-solid build and reliable, accurate performance. The fact that it feels and responds very similar to the industry standard SL1200 turntables and with a user-friendly feature-set, should be enough to make this a serious competitor in the CD DJ game. The only 2 faults that were a little hard for me to overlook was the fact that it took 8 seconds to load a CD (same as numark CDX by the way), and the fact that you could not scratch with pitch lock on. If you can get past these two problems (and burn your MP3's higher than 128-bit); then you will be in love with some great decks.

Pioneer Pioneer CDJ1000 Mk3

The Pioneer genes are clear in the CDJ-1000MK3. The deck offers the same robust build beloved by club owners and DJs, is finished in the familiar high-quality polished look and remains faithful to the clean, clear layout that has become the accepted format for tabletop CD decks. But the subtle revisions add more intuition, make it easier to transport music, and improve track info: refinements that make cueing, looping, scratching and stretching a track easier than ever.

With full MP3 support including VBR files, intelligent features, such as the direct folder search button, allow DJs to quickly access files within folders on the disc for intuitive, fast cueing. A total wide tempo range (+70% to –100%) also gives greater control than many competitor models.

Along with multimedia cards, SD cards are now also compatible with the CDJ-1000MK3 so that HOT CUES, HOT LOOP points and WAVE display data can be easily stored and loaded.

The CDJ-1000MK3 includes a unique JOG feeling adjust (to the top right of the JOG wheel). It tailors the deck to performers’ individual styles by altering the resistance of the wheel, which benefits from a new metallic ‘non-slip’ finish. The visibility and detail of the information shown on the 360˚ JOG Display is also improved: the fluorescent display has been raised, increasing brightness. The cue marker is larger and new 45˚ angle marks make it easier for scratch DJs to time their effects. The track display has similarly advanced. Its resolution has been doubled, the lighting is multicolour and fluorescent and, as well as displaying the total number of tracks and track position, the WAVE data and playing address details are extended so that a DJ can see a track’s entire length at a glance.

HOT CUE is now partnered by a new HOT LOOP feature that stores up to three loops per track. The buttons are backlit orange for the loop and green for the cues while the re-loop button is now also backlit. A further addition is ‘resume play’: the deck will restart playing from the same point if a CD is ejected accidentally.

In keeping with the high quality components of the CDJ-1000MK3, gold RCA connectors are fitted along with a digital out for connection to digital mixers such as the DJM-800 / DJM-1000, ensuring the highest level of sonic purity available. Subtle design changes like the metallic master tempo button also mark the player as the third generation of the industry standard deck.

The new features add to the unique capabilities of the CDJ-1000MK2 and ensure that, as single tabletop CD systems cement their position as the dominant market platform, Pioneer continues to define the mark for digital DJ’ing: a level that has again been raised by listening to and acting on feedback from DJs.

Pioneer Pioneer CDJ400 (CDJ-400)

Designed by DJs for DJs and drawing inspiration from Pioneer’s industry standard CDJ-1000 series, this latest member of the world-famous CDJ family is fully geared up to serve the next generation of digital artists. The CDJ-400 allows DJs to play their MP3 collection off CD-R/RW discs as well as music from mass storage USB devices, such as USB keys, external hard drives and portable media devices [1]. The deck also features the world’s first Scratch Jog Effects [2], with three creative scratch effects and an amazing new Loop Divide function. Virtually all of the button and slider functions can send MIDI data via USB output, making it possible for the decks to control DJ software and other applications, such as Pioneer DJS [3] or Serato Scratch LIVE [4] on a PC or MAC. The CDJ-400 deck is a perfect partner for the DJM-400 mixer and together they provide the ultimate home party set–up.

‘With USB, MP3 and MIDI support, the world’s first Scratch Jog Effects and inspirational looping abilities, the CDJ-400 has been designed to keep DJs in tune with the latest digital developments, adding new levels of performance to their sets,’ says Jason Pook, European Product Development Manager, Pioneer Europe.

Key Features
Digital media playback
The CDJ-400 handles CD Audio and MP3 files from CD, while USB connectivity lets DJs draw upon sound libraries on external storage devices [5]. Through the new push-selection Rotary Scroll Wheel and Back Button, users can navigate files and folders as simply and quickly as on many of the leading portable media players available today.

MIDI control via USB
With Pioneer’s finger firmly on the pulse of digital DJ developments, it is only natural that the CDJ-400 can control DJ and music application software. This is achieved by simply selecting the PC Source Select button, so that virtually all of the deck’s buttons and slider can send MIDI control data via the PC USB connection. So when MIDI is the message, the CDJ-400 definitely delivers. For example, a DJ can connect the CDJ-400 to a PC or MAC and play and manipulate files from their favourite DJ application software – such as Pioneer DJS or Serato Scratch LIVE [4] – and this doesn’t even require a time-code disc to be used in the deck.

New illuminated Jog Wheel
With a design inspired by the club standard CDJ-1000 Jog Wheel comes the CDJ-400’s 115mm illuminated platter. You can choose from six different patterns of Jog Wheel illumination and even personalise your own CDJ ‘slip mats’ or jog sheets [6].

New Scratch Jog Effects
In addition to the Digital Jog Break Effects (JET, WAH and ROLL) found in CDJ Mode, Pioneer serves up the world’s first Scratch Jog Effects, BUBBLE, TRANS and WAH, in vinyl mode. BUBBLE simulates a scratch technique and is great for spin backs, while TRANS is like rhythmically transforming with a mixer’s cross fader and WAH resembles the guitar Wah pedal.

New Beat Loop Divide
Can you dance to this b-b-beat? Making the magic of live mash-up even more manageable, the funky new Beat Loop Divide facility rhythmically dices loops to fashion beats with drama, intrigue or whatever your desired effect. It is easily adjustable using its (- and +) buttons during loop playback, thereby creating loops with mind-melting, dancefloor-destroying twists.

Hot Loop and Beat Loop
Besides the Beat Loop Divide, the CDJ-400 lets DJs create flawless four-beat Beat Loops and Hot Loops. For the latter hit the Hot Loop (In/Out point) buttons during a loop to retrigger the loop. Up to 10 Cue/Loop points per disc, for up to 920 discs, can be stored in memory and transferred by usb key between CDJ-400s.

Other key features
1. Tempo range settings available: ±6%, ±10%, ±16% and WIDE [7]
2. Resume function – restarts playback of a disc from the point at which it was most recently ejected
3. Digital Output – connect to Pioneer’s range of digital DJM mixers or other studio equipment
4. Text Mode – displays CD-TEXT and ID3 tag information
5. Reverse play – instant reverse play
6. Shock-Proof Memory and Pioneer Oil Damper Float construction
7. High-quality 7x5 dot matrix display

(please note;

*1 The CDJ-400 supports mass storage USB memory, but may not support playback of all USB devices or provide sufficient electrical power for them. It cannot play copyright-protected files (DRM).
*2 As of 7th November 2007, according to Pioneer.

Since the CDJ-200 is MP3 compatible, aspiring DJs can now include the very latest downloaded tracks in their sets, without having to convert the audio from other formats. The MP3 functionality also allows DJs to locate tracks more quickly (via folder search) and to see the name of the disc, artist and song on the unit’s bright dot-matrix display window. This screen also has a bar graph showing the elapsed and remaining playing time of a track, plus an Auto BPM Counter, giving DJs the real-time information they need to create better mixes more quickly. The unit has a tempo read-out as well as a separate Master Tempo button with three settings for locking the pitch of a track as it’s sped up or slowed down.

The unit uses an electric-blue light at strategic locations to give the DJ constant feedback about the status of the CD and the effects in use. The light above the CD-slot, for example, shows that there’s no disc onboard and also guides the DJ to the user-friendly quick-load slot. With the disc inserted, that light goes off and a blue illuminated ring appears around the edge of the jog wheel - indicating that a CD is loaded and ready for playback.

An established highlight of Pioneer’s Pro DJ CDJ players, the jog wheel can be used to speed up or slow down the music; to fine-tune cue points manually; or to control the mix with the help of another proven feature, the digital jog break. This has three effect buttons (jet, zip, wah) for creating original sounds as the DJ manipulates the jog wheel. When the digital jog break is on, the blue ring flashes quickly. Once the HOLD/RESET button is used, the flashing slows down. With the effects off, the continuous blue light returns.

The CDJ-200 also has a unique “resume” function that takes effect if a CD is ejected accidentally. Once the DJ re-inserts the disc, it automatically starts playing from exactly the point where it stopped. The unit has a digital out socket so that all of the digital features available in DJ Mode can be carried over to a connected digital environment. The headphone jack with volume control allows the DJ to monitor a CD without connecting the CDJ-200 to a mixer or external amplifier.
